At dawn of Wednesday , the 18th of January 2012 , one of the Weightlifting idols who had played a great part in enhancing world weightlifting , said farewell to the terrestrial globe.
Dr. Asghar Shahabi , the former IWF and AWF Medical Committee member who recently had been appointed as the honorary lifetime chairman of AWF Medical Committee , confronted with a brain incident during the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships held in Thailand and in spite of taking care of him specifically , at last he passed away this morning in his hometown ,Tabriz.
Dr. Shahabi , with 50 years experience in weightlifting field , offered some valuable services to the weightlifting world . AWF offers its deep sorrow for this grievous toll to his respectable family and also the weightlifting concerned authorities , athletes and fans in all over the world and seeks God’s compassion and mercy for him.

It is with deep sorrow that I learnt about the sad news that Dr. Asghar Shahabi passed away the day before. I would like to express my deepest sympathy for his family. It is also a great loss for the Asian weightlifting family.
Dr. Shahbi had been so dear to all of us. He had worked so hard and so actively for the sport of weightlifting for so many years, receiving respect and love from around the world. What he had contributed and achieved will remain in our memory forever.

We attended many Championships together and he was always a lovely person, and very knowledgeable of the sport. The weightlifting family has certainly lost a great player.

With a heavy heart I read today that Dr. Ashgar Shahabi has passed away.
I counted Dr. Shahabi among my special friends in weightlifting and
have so many warm memories of the time I spent visiting with him at
weightlifting competitions around the world. We were lucky to have
