Weightlifting Test event planned
for Guangzhou Asian Games |
.jpg) |
Hong Kong: With the weightlifting competition of the fifth East Asian Games in full swing, attention is already turning to the Asian Games in Guangzhou next November. A test event for weightlifting will be held at the Asian Games venue in May, giving organisers and officials plenty of time to finetune the procedure in time for the Asiad six months down the road.
“I went to Guangzhou a few months ago and they have good facilities and good potential for the Asian Games,” said Ali Moradi, AWF General Secretary & Competition Director of the EAG weightlifting event at Lai Chi Kok Park Sports Centre.
“I met the organising committee of the Guangzhou Asian Games and they are working very hard to make the Games a big success. In May 2010 we will hold our test event. It will be for juniors in two categories for men and two for women, and that is enough to test everything related to the weightlifting competition,” added the Iranian sports official, who is general secretary of the Asian Weightlifting Federation.
“Our sport is one of the most important sports in Asia, one of the traditional sports of Asia and one of the most popular. I am very happy about this.”
Mr. Ali Moradi expects the competition to be even tougher next year, as the likes of Macau and Hong Kong are improving all the time due to strong cooperation with China.
“Since the last East Asian Games in Macau in 2005, Macau has grown up in weightlifting and I think Hong Kong will do the same for the next Games in our sport because China is giving them help. They are trying very hard to develop our sport in the region and you can see the results of that effort here.”
Olympic champion Pak Hyon Suk of DPR Korea dominated the women’s -63kg category on Wednesday and Mr. Ali Moradi AWF General Secretary credits the methodical training, tactics and coaching for the rise in the DPR Korea team.

Starting 5th EAST ASIAN GAMES IN Hong Kong
06 Dec 2009 |
 |
Hong Kong: With opening ceremonies always under the spotlight at major multi-sports events, it is difficult to come up with something original. But that’s exactly what Hong Kong did for the opening ceremony of the fifth East Asian Games on Saturday night, according to IOC member Shun-ichiro Okano.
“It was fantastic. In the past I have never seen such an opening ceremony, with a floating stage and so many decorated ships sailing past in the harbour,” said the respected Japanese sports dignitary.
“The fireworks were so great. Overall it was very impressive. I did not expect such a fantastic opening ceremony – and in one hour it was all finished. This is important.”
One of the main reasons for the relative brevity of the opening ceremony was that only nine teams were involved, and only five delegates plus the flag-bearer of each team lined up on the floating stage. There was no lengthy march-in involving hundreds of athletes and officials round the track of the main stadium.
“Maybe some of the athletes were not satisfied just watching the opening ceremony and not marching in, but from a spectator’s point of view it was very good,” he added.
Olympic heavyweights China, Korea and Japan are joined by Hong Kong-China, Macau-China, Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Mongolia and the American protectorate of Guam in the nine-team event, which offers 262 gold medals in 22 sports from December 5-13.

Iran and Korea will participate
in Go Yang Competitions
with their phenomenon
in the Super Heavy Weight |
 |
A glance over the engaged super heavy weight lifters of Go Yang World Championships’ prime quorum indicates that the countries of Iran and S. Korea intend to inter this battle filed with their phenomenon. Considering the absence of STEINER Matthias from Germany but being present of the Russian CHIGISHEV Evgeny like in Beijing Olympic who is the main claimer of gaining the strongest man of the World title in 2009, it’s hopeful, in Go Yang, some new characters like Saeid ALI HOSSEINI, Behdahd SALIMI KORD ASIABI the both from Iran and AN Yong kwon from S. Korea change this equation by registering wonderful records. Of course we should not pass simply by the names of SHYMECHKO Ihor , UDACHYN Artem both from Ukraine and PISHREV Evgeny from Russia .
In spite of the young lifters who are just 20 years old and have been engaged to participate in +105 kg. category we can refer to the probable attendance of KOBALADZE George from Canada in this series of the competitions who by 33 years old wish to struggle with the youth.
In the category of +105 kg. 25 people have registered their names as the primary entry up to now but the lists haven’t been finalized yet and there is some possibility of changes in the number of the current athletes.

55th OCA Executive Board meeting
in Hanoi
|
 |
OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah opened the 55th OCA Executive Board meeting in Hanoi on Saturday morning. The president began his introductory remarks by stressing the increasingly influential role Asia was playing in the Olympic movement, as witnessed at the recent IOC Congress in Copenhagen.
“The whole world gathered for the IOC Congress, and President Jacques Rogge successfully led this gathering,” said Sheikh Ahmad.
“From the Sport Congress we held in Kuwait in March, Asia was a main participant in many fields and contributed to the strategy of the sports movement for the next decade.
“So I would like to thank our officials for their success within the IOC, and for the successful staging of the 1st OCA Sport Congress.”
Sheikh Ahmad had special words of praise for Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda for the way Tokyo conducted their bid for the 2016 Olympics. After passing through the first round of voting at the expense of Chicago, Tokyo was eliminated in the second round before Rio de Janeiro beat Madrid in the final round.
“Tokyo really was a good representative of Asia. You have worked hard, given your best effort and tried to bring the Olympics to Tokyo and to Asia – and trying is a success. I hope we continue to work for the future to make sure Asia always has a presence in the Olympics.
“President Takeda, the OCA thanks you for the effort in your bidding and in your sportsmanship.”
