The Asian Interclub Championships

in the World Competitions Level

The 6 th series of the Asian Interclub Weightlifting Championships in the Junior Category and the 9 th series of these battles in the senior section were held by the presence of the Weightlifting most interested countries of the ancient Continent. By the witnesses of the presents, the competitions involved the high level so that so many people evaluated it in the World Championships level. The presence of 2008 Beijing Olympic two champions from S.Korea named SA Jaehyouk in Men's 77kg. Category and Jang Miran in Women's +75 kg. By itself is another confirmation to this idea. At the same time, some countries' Beijing Olympic delegates were present in Go Yang competitions but were influenced by the performance of the other weightlifters in order to be proved that how the level of this period of Interclub competitions were high. The space between the totally haltered weights by some athletes in the related categories (particularly in Men) and the records of 2008 Olympic Champions was less than 20 kilos and were different from the World records by the same amount. For instance, in +105 kg. Category of the Asian Interclub Junior, if the haltered weights of Saeid Ali Hosseini _ the phenomenon of the competitions from Iran, were registered in Beijing Olympic, undoubtedly he was placed in the fourth position. This weight lifter could lift 205 kilos in Snatch, which was 2 kilos more than the record of STEINER Matthias the German 2008 Beijing Olympic Champion. He also released unluckily the barbell in his third attempt to lift the 260 kg. In +105 senior category in Clean & Jerk movement, which if it took place in this case he could have lifted 2 kilos more than the German weightlifter in Clean & Jerk. Whilst the records of the Men's extra heavy category are 213kg. In Snatch, 263 in Clean & Jerk and 476 in Total movements.

It should be said that in general, holding the Asian Interclub Weightlifting Competitions with this quality, has directed the glance of the world people to this continent more than before and has proved the special position of the weightlifting sport in the most populated continent of the world.

India , South Korea and Japan

the Record Holders of Olympics

From 1936 and it was in Berlin that the Asian entered into the Olympic Weightlifting Competitions. In that year , it was the Chinese that for the first time experienced their presence in the Olympic Weightlifting Competitions and now after passing 72 years , this most populated Country of the world is known as the Champions of both Men's and Women's categories in Olympic . But by considering the numbers of the participation in the Olympics, we have to confess that the three countries of India , Japan and the South Korea , with 14 times presence in the Competitions are the record holders of this category. Of course the Indian had no representative in the 2008 Beijing Olympic so the Koreans and Japanese reached to its record. In the Beijing Olympic Games, the countries such as Tajikistan, and Vietnam could succeed to have representatives in the Weightlifting while before it they have had no experience in this field. Of course the Vietnamese have had the record of presence in the Women's Competitions in Olympic but Tajikistan have had no experience neither in Men's nor in Women's categories in the previous Olympic Competitions.

The country of Philippine owned a new experience in the 2008 Beijing Olympic. They let a Woman lifter participate in the Competition named DIAZ Haidilyn . This Pilipino athlete who has participated in 58 kg. Category became the eleventh with 192 kg. ,but she caused her country owns a new experience. In fact it was the first time that Philippine has a representative in the Women's Olympic Weightlifting. It is remarkable that the Women's Weightlifting Battles started in 2000 and with the Competitions of Sidney was added to the Olympic Competitions. About the Women's Olympic Weightlifting we have to mention that all the present teams in 2008 Athens Olympic were present in the 2008 Olympic too except the teams of Myanmar and India. Of course the Indians were deprived from participating in the competitions in the last days to the beginning of the competitions. Up to now, 13 Asian countries have had the experience of participating in the Olympic Women Weightlifting that have had brilliant result and have gained some colorful medals.

Dr. Tamas Ajan's Message

in conjunction with the

AWF's 50 th Establishment Anniversary

Dr.Tamas Ajan the president of International Weightlifting Federation, in an important message to the authorities and the Confederation Members, by congratulating this theme, reminisced about the Asian's honors and glories in different Olympic and World courts. Likewise, he hoped the Asian Continent to be succeeded in all fields and makes prove its capacities more than before. What you observe in the following lines, is a glance to his message:

It gives me great honour to greet, on behalf of the International Weightlifting Federation, the 50-year old Asian Weightlifting Federation, a stronghold of the world's weightlifting!

More than a half century has passed since 1948, when at the London Olympic Games Jafar Mohammad Salmassi of Iran captured the first Olympic medal for Asian weightlifting, with his third place. In Helsinki , Asia already won silver, thanks to another Iranian, Mahmoud Namdjou. The first Olympic gold medal arrived at the continent in 1964, when Yoshinobu Miyake of Japan broke the ice.

On the other hand, Asia did not have to wait so long for the first World Championship title. Right after London , in 1949, legendary Mahmoud Namdjou was victorious at the Scheveningen World Championships.

However, the real “Golden Age” for Asian weightlifting started in 1984, with the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Including the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the various member-countries of Asia collected altogether 1,247 gold medals in Olympic Games, senior, junior and university world championships! Especially in women's weightlifting, Asia has grown into dominance and produces an unlimited number of great champions and stars ever since.

It was not only through their athletes that Asians have contributed to the progress of world weightlifting. Many major events have been hosted by the continent in the last few decades – universally at very high levels. Olympic Games were held in Tokyo , Seoul and Beijing , but in addition to these, wonderful world championships were organised in Teheran, Manila , Guangzhou , Chiangmai and Jakarta . Junior and University world championships were carried out in several other Asian cities.

The Asian Weightlifting Federation, which was founded 50 years ago, needs to be congratulated on the great progress of its membership, influence, leadership and activities. By today, the AWF regularly organises its senior, junior, youth and various Regional Championships; besides it is actively involved in the various Continental and Regional Games held in its member countries. Weightlifting can be proud to be on the program of all of these Games – what is more: in most events it has reached the status of a core sport.

Within its membership of 184 nations, the IWF has 43 member-Federations in Asia . Asia is also strongly represented in the leading bodies of the International Federation and its experts are helping to disperse weightlifting knowledge all over the world.

During the 50 years of its history, the Asian Weightlifting Federation has lived some glorious but also some difficult times; but its progress and success was always more steady and faster when it was seeking unity within its membership, friendship and co-operation, for the ultimate benefit of weightlifting inside and beyond Asia . This is the same spirit that is shared with the IWF and which has made the AWF a strong and leading organisation.

Let me congratulate the AWF on its 50 th birthday and wish all its leading bodies, officials, National Federations, athletes and coaches further success in their activities!

A general calculation shows that from the 45 distributed medals in 2008 Beijing Olympic Competitions , 13 gold , 5 silver and 6 bronze medals ( 24 medals ) came into the Asians' bag and it means ; 53 percent of all weightlifting medals .

Surly JANG Mi-ran the S. Korean woman lifter in +75kg. category also could improve the Olympic records for 7 times and the World Senior records for 5 times in the Snatch , Clean & Jerk and in total movements but the improvement rate of LIU Chunhong's records was more than the former records.

In men's section STEINER Matthias from Germany did a great function and grasped the gold medal of +105 category in the presence of lifters like CHIGISHEV Evgeny from Russia , SCERBATIHS Viktors from Latvia and UDACHYN Artem from Ukraine , but the super star of the men's section was ARAMNAU Andrei a young athlete from Byelorussia that could break the Olympic records for 5 times , the World Junior records for 5 times , the World Senior for 3 times and became the champion of +105 kg. potently . Probable Changing in Some Countries quotas in 2008 Beijing Olympic

At its recent meeting in Cali , Colombia , the IWF Executive Board put under revision its earlier decision of 11 March 2008, according to which Olympic qualification quota should be withdrawn from countries producing positive doping results between 1 January and August of 2008. That particular measure was intended to underline the IWF?s extremely strong and determined fight against the abuse of doping.

With regard to the fact, however,

- that the Olympic Games are the event of the International Olympic Committee and come under its jurisdiction,

- that the Olympic Qualification Regulations for the 2008 Beijing Games were approved by the IOC already at the middle of 2006,

- that the above stipulation of the IWF was not included in the approved Qualification Regulation for Weightlifting and no such modification can be made at this late date,

after consulting the IOC, the IWF acknowledges that it will not implement its former decision for Beijing 2008.

At the same time, the countries concerned have the right to return Olympic quota to the IWF, and the IWF very much appreciates if such NOCs , adopting the principles and the spirit of the anti-doping fight, are willing to do so.

The IWF has already determined to include such rule into the Qualification Regulation for the next, the 2012 London Olympic Games.
